Star Marine of Brampton, Ontario commissioned the design
of this 30 footer as a fast, easy sailing, cruiser that
would also perform well in competitive MORC and PHRF
racing. The clean, undistorted hull lines and moderate
displacement combine for an easily driven hull which
coupled with the large masthead rig will lead to
enjoyable sailing in both light and heavy airs.
Considerable time has been spent on the human
engineering of the accommodations and deck to insure
comfortable cruising and racing. The main salon seats
six around a bulkhead mounted table and is easily
accessible from the large L shaped galley. There is full
standing headroom throughout the main salon, in the
galley, and at the chart table, which also has sitting
headroom on its aft side. Enjoyable two couple cruising
is encouraged by the aft double quarter berth and
forward double berth (converted with a filler cushion)
which are separated by the dual purpose hanging locker
door. Although most will prefer to cruise with fewer
crew, the five berths could sleep up to seven people.
On deck, the eight foot cockpit is laid out for
either tiller or wheel steering and has seats
comfortable for both sailing and lounging. There are
hatches aft for the stove bottle storage locker and
lazarette while forward, the anchor well eases a common
cruising chore. The cabin house has been kept narrow
enough for proper racing genoa sheeting angles yet is
still wide enough to have headroom throughout the cabin.
The hull and rig design of this Maxi-MORC boat draws
on my experience with Details, the 1982 MORC
International Champion, and my IOR designs, Impact and
1984 SORC class winner, Allegiance. It features a fine
entry angle, U shaped forward sections and a relatively
narrow waterline beam. The deck aft is quite wide to
provide added righting moment from the seated crew, but
the hull near the waterline is not overly wide,
preventing excess bow down trim when heeled. The
ellip¬tical keel and rudder plan forms were developed
from those on the successful Andercraft 36, Chickenlips.
The sail plan has been tailored to the MORC rule with a
high aspect ratio fore triangle setting 155% genoas and
low aspect ratio main. MORC legal adjustable aft lower
shrouds allow mast bend control without the
complications of running backstays or a babystay.
Hull and deck are hand laminated balsa cored
fiberglass using unidirectional and biaxial fabrics. A
molded stringer system bonded to the hull makes
extensive use of unidirectional reinforcements. This
highly engineered construction will produce a light,
stiff and strong hull without resorting to expensive
exotic materials and allows a very nicely finished
interior without exceeding the design displacement.
This 30 footer is designed to perform well on the race
course and also to give weeks of comfortable cruising,
in short, to be a Grand Touring 30 as opposed to a
stripped out Grand Prix 30. The racing heritage of its
hull and rig design has been bred with a spacious and
comfortable interior state of the art construction to
meet this goal.
